Brosix offers two desktop applications for Windows, Mac and Linux:
- Brosix Desktop (New Version)
- Brosix Classic
Both versions are available and supported. However, there are important differences in features and compatibility.
Key Advantage of the New Desktop App
The main advantage of the new Desktop App is significantly improved audio and video call quality.
It provides:
- Crystal-clear sound
- High-quality video
- More stable connections
- Full compatibility with mobile apps (iOS and Android)
- Global Search
- Media Library
- Improved screenshot tools
- Redesigned user interface.
Users of the new Desktop App can make audio and video calls with mobile users.
New Desktop App can stream its screen to mobile users (phones and tablets).
The Desktop Classic version does not support audio/video calls with mobile devices.
For teams that rely on voice and video communication across desktop and mobile, the new app is strongly recommended.
The new Desktop App is the actively evolving version of Brosix and will continue to receive improvements over time.
Interface Differences
New Brosix for Desktop
- Modern single-window interface
- Chats, file transfers, calls, and screen sharing are handled inside one main window
- Designed for a cleaner and more streamlined experience
Brosix Classic
- Traditional multi-window layout
- Each chat opens in a separate window
- Calls, file transfers, and screen sharing open separately
Some long-time users prefer this layout because they are used to it.
Feature Compatibility Between Versions
If team members use different versions, please note the following:
Audio and Video Calls
- Not compatible between New Desktop App and Brosix Classic
- Not compatible between Desktop Classic and mobile apps
- Fully compatible between:
- New Desktop App ↔ New Desktop App
- New Desktop App ↔ Mobile
For calls to work, both users must be on compatible versions.
Screen Sharing
Screen sharing is not compatible between the two Desktop versions.
Additional differences:
- Desktop Classic supports remote control during screen sharing.
- The new Desktop App does not support remote control.
- The new Desktop App can stream its screen to mobile devices (phones and tablets).
Screenshot Function
Both versions support standard screenshot sending and receiving between each other.
However:
- Desktop Classic includes a peer-to-peer screenshot mode
- Screenshots sent via peer-to-peer mode are not compatible with the new Desktop App
Standard screenshot sending remains compatible across versions.
Peer-to-Peer Mode (Classic Only)
Brosix Classic supports peer-to-peer mode for:
- File transfers
- Screenshot (when using P2P)
- Certain direct communication channels
The new Desktop App does not include peer-to-peer mode.
Whiteboard (Classic Only)
Brosix Classic includes a built-in Whiteboard feature.
The new Desktop App does not include Whiteboard.
Can We Use Both Versions in the Same Team?
Yes, both versions can connect to the same Brosix network for messaging and standard file sharing.
However, because some features are not cross-compatible (calls, screen sharing, peer-to-peer functions), we recommend that teams standardize on one version whenever possible.
