Windows Classic vs. New Brosix App – Differences and Compatibility

Brosix offers two desktop applications for Windows:

  • Brosix for Windows (New Version)
  • Brosix for Windows Classic

Both versions are available and supported. However, there are important differences in features and compatibility.

Key Advantage of the New Windows App

The main advantage of the new Windows app is significantly improved audio and video call quality.

It provides:

  • Crystal-clear sound
  • High-quality video
  • More stable connections
  • Full compatibility with mobile apps (iOS and Android)

Users of the new Windows app can make audio and video calls with mobile users.

The Windows Classic version does not support audio/video calls with mobile devices.

For teams that rely on voice and video communication across desktop and mobile, the new app is strongly recommended.

The new Windows app is the actively evolving version of Brosix and will continue to receive improvements over time.

Interface Differences

New Brosix for Windows

  • Modern single-window interface
  • Chats, file transfers, calls, and screen sharing are handled inside one main window
  • Designed for a cleaner and more streamlined experience

Brosix for Windows Classic

  • Traditional multi-window layout
  • Each chat opens in a separate window
  • Calls, file transfers, and screen sharing open separately

Some long-time users prefer this layout because they are used to it.

Feature Compatibility Between Versions

If team members use different versions, please note the following:

Audio and Video Calls

  • Not compatible between New Windows and Windows Classic
  • Not compatible between Windows Classic and mobile apps
  • Fully compatible between:
    • New Windows ↔ New Windows
    • New Windows ↔ Mobile

For calls to work, both users must be on compatible versions.

Screen Sharing

Screen sharing is not compatible between the two Windows versions.

Additional differences:

  • Windows Classic supports remote control during screen sharing.
  • The new Windows app does not support remote control.

Screenshot Function

Both versions support standard screenshot sending and receiving between each other.

However:

  • Windows Classic includes a peer-to-peer screenshot mode
  • Screenshots sent via peer-to-peer mode are not compatible with the new Windows app

Standard screenshot sending remains compatible across versions.

Peer-to-Peer Mode (Classic Only)

Windows Classic supports peer-to-peer mode for:

  • File transfers
  • Screenshot (when using P2P)
  • Certain direct communication channels

The new Windows app does not include peer-to-peer mode.

Whiteboard (Classic Only)

Windows Classic includes a built-in Whiteboard feature.

The new Windows app does not include Whiteboard.

Can We Use Both Versions in the Same Team?

Yes, both versions can connect to the same Brosix network for messaging and standard file sharing.

However, because some features are not cross-compatible (calls, screen sharing, peer-to-peer functions), we recommend that teams standardize on one version whenever possible.
